First, you learn to connect the sounds of your new language to images for objects, actions, and increasingly complex visual “stories”. You hear the language and move elements on screen to confirm your understanding of what you are hearing.
This follows the absolutely necessary developmental process that children go through when they are learning their mother tongue! The connections between the language and responses in the body cannot be ignored!
Stage 1. Connect Sounds to “Images”
Second, you practice speaking words and short phrases with a speech feedback system that records your speaking and allows you to compare your own pronunciation with native speaker models.
The ability to hear yourself speaking, and compare with a model is another critical skill that MUST be mastered to speak a second language well. Without this foundation skill, you hit an invisible ceiling that is very difficult to pass beyond!
Stage 2. Speak with Audio Feedback
Stage 3. Command Your Avatar Verbally
Thirdly, you then start giving commands to your digital avatar, focusing on content that you already understand, and asking your avatar to move and manipulate objects that you command through your speech.
You’ll begin with simple phrases such as: “pick up the cup”, and your avatar (Language Parent) will understand and respond.
As you build skill, confidence and competence you’ll be producing longer and longer phrases - including things like: “show your mother the picture that you drew of the dog chasing the ball in the park”.
Because of the gentle, step-by-step process through which you interact with new words, these skills will come to you comfortably and easily.
Stage 4. Full Avatar Conversations
Finally, when you are fully prepared, you start to engage with your avatar in full conversations around daily activities such as visiting a restaurant or a bank.
Through this process you learn to connect the words that you hear to meaning, the same way you do with your mother tongue. And, step-by-step, you learn to connect words together into sequences to make yourself fully understood at deeper and deeper levels.
